The WIMS teams could not have worked effectively without the help of a handful of Southern women they called their "angels." These women not only served as hostesses, they also worked behind the scenes to arrange housing, rent cars, and recruit others to open their homes to the northern women so as not to arouse suspicion in the community.
Four women helped pave the way for the WIMS team members; two were black and two were white. The black women were Clarie Collins Harvey and Lillie Bell Jones. The white women were Lillian Burnstein and Ann Hewitt.The Southern women were:
