Recent News From the Center for Public History
Vicki Myers will join the Historic Preservation Department of the Mississippi Department of Archives and History located in Jackson, Mississippi, beginning October 5, 2009. Vicki, who recently completed her M.A. in Public History at UH, will be a Certified Local Governments Coordinator working with local governments on their historic preservation efforts. Vicki lived in Jackson, Mississippi, while completing her B.A. in History at Millsaps College.
Julie Cohn will serve as the Public History Fellow in the Center for Public History during the 2009-2010 academic year. Julie holds a Master's Degree in Anthropology from Stanford University and is currently a Ph.D. candidate studying energy history with Dr. Martin Melosi, Dr. Joseph Pratt, and Dr. Kathleen Brosnan. As the Public History Fellow, Julie will assist the Center with a variety of projects including two workshops scheduled for Spring 2009: "Cities in the Americas," presented in association with Georgetown University, March 7-8, 2009; and "Energy Capitals, Local Impact, Global Influence," presented by the University of Houston and funded by the National Science Foundation, May 20-22, 2009. In addition, Julie will develop an e-Newsletter to provide up-to-date news and information to members of the CPH community.
Joseph Stromberg was awarded a grant from the Environmental Institute of Houston for his dissertation, “Atomic Cowboys: Regulation and Resistance to Nuclear Power in Texas.” The total amount of the award is $12,500 and will help him complete the research and writing for the dissertation.
In September 2008, Teresa Tomkins-Walsh presented “Save Buffalo Bayou!: Class Standing and Successful Environmental Action, 1966-1971" at Common Grounds, Converging Gazes: Integrating the Social and Environmental in History, Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales in Paris, France.
Noted Environmental Historian Ian Tyrrell to Speak at UH
Ian Tyrrell, the Scientia Professor of History at the University of New South Wales and the first Joyce Appleby visiting professor of History at UCLA in 2009-2010 will speak on November 13, 2009 at 1 p.m. in AH 549. His talk is titled "Gifford Pinchot, the Wilderness Warrior, and the World."
An internationally recognized scholar, Tyrrell is the author of some seven books including True Gardens of the Gods: Californian-Australian Environmental Reform, 1860-1930 (1999) and Transnational Nation: The United States in Global Perspective since 1789 (2007). He had published numerous articles in scholarly journals such as the American Historical Review and the Journal of American History, among others.
In his presentation, he will talk about his ongoing research on the international aspects of American Progressive Era Conservation, offering among other things a critique of Douglas Brinkley’s recently published Wilderness Warrior.
The talk will be of interest to anyone interested in political history, the Progressive Era, environmental history, or transnational history. Sponsored by the Tenneco Lecture Series, the Center for Public History, and the History Department.
Upcoming Talk on the History of Globalization by Dr. Julio Moreno
Dr. Julio Moreno will give a talk titled, “What Global Capitalism Leaves to the Nation: Coca-Cola, the United States, and Latin America.” Dr. Moreno's presentation will be held on Tuesday, November 3rd in McElhinney Hall 115 at 2:30. The author of a number of books and articles, Dr. Moreno is an associate professor and Co-Director of the Center for Latino Studies in the Americas at the University of San Francisco.
Frank Holt's Article Series Wins Award

Dr. Frank Holt, an expert on Ancient History at the University of Houston, recently won a Magnum Opus Awards Honorable Mention for Best Series of Articles for his "I Witness History Series published by the Saudi Aramco World magazine.
In each article an ancient object accurately recounts its history in the first person and with a distinct voice. The objects range from an Egyptian obelisk to Hammurabi's Code, among a number of others. Having received much encouragement from colleagues, Dr. Holt plans on publishing the articles in expanded form in a future book. The articles can be found on the Saudi Aramco World magazine website
